Syncing lets you always have the most recent versions of your files close at hand. With Nero BackItUp & Burn you can keep your files updated by automatically synchronizing multiple copies of individual files. Users can choose incremental or differential backups. Incremental backups back up only the data that has been modified or added since the last backup, whether the previous back up is a full backup or an earlier incremental backup. A differential backup refers to a type of backup update or extension. With a differential backup, only the data that has been modified or added since the first full backup is backed up.

Yes, with Nero BackItUp & Burn you can restore backups made with older versions.
Two methods are available for restoring backed up files with Nero BackItUp.
You can use the previously installed version or any newer version of Nero BackItUp.

Method 1: Files are available as uncompressed files

If you have not used compression to back up files then you can simply copy the files to your hard drive and add them to the folders of your choice.

Method 2: Files are available as compressed files

If the backup was made with compression then open the files by double-clicking the NBI file or any of the available NBA files (this should be sufficient but depends on your initial settings). Backups that consist of several discs have the NBI file located on the last disc of the set; NBA files can be accessed by clicking any NBA file in the set.
After double-clicking the files, Nero BackItUp will open and the restore wizard will start. The wizard will read out the structure of the backup and lead you through the next steps. When necessary you will be asked to insert the next disc of the series or change to the drive which contains the required disc.

This means the drive is not ready or properly recognized on your PC. This is a driver issue so basically there's nothing we can do with softwares including Nero to control the drive status to fix this issue. This case is very much likely due to the lack of enough power supply for the drive or some other light causes.

Please check the following,

- Is the Disc Drive PC built-in or USB connected?
1. If it's built-in, please check if there's any firmware update available for your drive.
2. If it's USB connected, please check and try the following,
A: Insert the USB cable into another slot to see if it works.
B: Please check if there's any firmware updates for your drive.
C: Please check if your drive has a slot for AC adapter for power supply.

If the above doesn't solve the problem, please contact the seller or manufacturer of the drive or the PC with the drive built-in.

Most file syncing services have a single folder for all of the files you want to access via the web. You upload your files to a single location, and then access them from any of your web-enabled devices. If you overwrite or delete a file from that main upload folder, the file is gone from the online storage—and all of your devices along with it.

We offer a different solution that lets you control how and where your files are stored. With Nero BackItUp, your files will not be automatically downloaded to your devices, which will free up valuable space on your local hard drives. Plus, you’re protected from losing your files if you should accidentally delete them from your local hard drive. Nero BackItUp also gives you a choice of where you want to keep your backed-up files. For example, you can use online storage for files that you want to access from anywhere at any time, and then use your external hard drive or a disc for anything that you might not want to upload to the cloud.

Backup target:
The available backup locations vary in performance, accessibility and the level of protection they provide.

Internal hard drives - those already installed on your device — provide the highest performance and convenience, but they are the least reliable option.

External hard drives and Network Attached Storage devices that connect directly to your PC but have a different power source provide a much higher level of protection.

Storing files on discs—like CDs, DVDs or Blu-rays—is another safe option, but the manual transfer of files can be time consuming.

Backups to online storage also provide very good protection since they are stored off-site. You can also access backed-up data from any web browser or the Nero BackItUp apps for Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

We recommend that you backup everything that is important to you. We understand, however, that all files are not the same—you may want to share photos from your family vacation while keeping sensitive financial data under tight security. That’s why we designed Nero BackItUp to allow you to tailor your settings to meet your privacy needs.

Backup schedule:
There are some files that you use once in a while and others you need to access on a daily basis. Nero BackItUp lets you schedule jobs at different time intervals to accommodate for that. For instance, you can schedule a once-weekly backup for files that you don’t change all the time, and a continuous backup for those that are constantly being edited. When you schedule a continuous backup job, the file will be saved every time a change has been made. That means you can rest assured that your file will be current and available to you across all of your devices.

Compression and encryption: Nero BackItUp can apply compression and encryption to your local backups. Hardware-accelerated AES 256bit encryption makes sure that your backup is encrypted and can only be accessed with your password. Compression helps save space on your target device.

The free version of Nero BackItUp allows you to backup files to hard drives and optical discs without ever requiring you to login. To use the features of your PRO subscription, however, you need to be logged in at least once every seven days. To run backups to online storage, you also must be connected to the web

Nero BackItUp installs a tool called Nero ControlCenter on your PC. By default, it automatically checks for new updates every 7 days, and will notify you if a new version has been made available. To manually check for updates, you can open Nero ControlCenter any time.

Nero BackItUp will notify you if a file has not been backed up successfully. Most of the time this is because the file is being used by another program. Close any applications that may still be using that file and try the backup again.

Although we know it’s an inconvenience, the installation process can only make the necessary system updates during a full reboot.

Nero BackItUp tries to keep the load on your system to a minimum. If a lot of changes are made to a file in a short time frame, Nero BackItUp will delay the backup slightly so it can apply all changes at once rather than taxing your system with many small updates.

Whether your Internet connection is through DSL, Cable, Powerline or Fiber, it is usually asynchronous. This means that the upload speed—the rate at which you can backup data to online storage—is only a fraction of the download speed—the rate at which you download from online storage or browse the web. Usually the upload bandwidth is just 5-25% of your download bandwidth. When you purchase Internet service, that big bandwidth number advertised by your service provider generally applies only to download speeds

Go to www.speedtest.net (this page is not associated in any way with Nero) and run a speed test. The upload speed is what matters most when it comes to online backups. The result is given in Mbps (Megabits per second). Check if the results of the speed test match the speed promised in your Internet service provider’s contract.

First, you need two values: the upload rate of your Internet connection and the total size of the data to be backed up. The upload rate is given in Megabits per second (Mbps). Take the file size in Megabytes and multiply it by 8 to get the file size in Megabits (1 Megabite = 8 Megabits). Finally, divide the size in Megabits by your upload rate. This will give you the approximate time in seconds that your backup job will need to be finished. You should add some 10-20% to get a realistic estimation since other apps on your PC might also be using some of the available bandwidth.

Example: 25.3GB of photos, 5Mbit/s upload rate
Calculation:
1. 25.3 Gigabyte * 1000 = 25.300 Megabyte
2. (25.300 Megabyte * 8) / 5 Megabit/s = 40.480 seconds
3. 40.480 seconds / 60 / 60 = 11.24 hours
4. 11.24 hours + 15% makes for about 13 hours that you will need to complete the initial backup.

By enabling background backup, you can ensure that your photos and videos are backed up without even launching the Nero BackItUp app.
However, Apple only allows us to run background backup when the geo-location of your device changes significantly. To be notified of these geo-location changes, Nero BackItUp needs to access your location. We’re not asking the device for your actual whereabouts, just if the location has changed recently.

When you launch Nero BackItUp for the first time, it will ask for access to your camera roll. If the app can’t find any photos, it most likely doesn’t have access to your camera roll. To verify and enable access, please go to the iOS “Settings”, select “Privacy” and then “Photos”. Please verify that the toggle switch setting for BackItUp is in the “On” position.

It is not yet possible for third party apps to access videos on Windows Phone 8.
We’re closely cooperating with Microsoft and will hopefully have an update soon.

Background backup runs automatically whenever your device is plugged-in and connected to Wi-Fi. So while you’re asleep, Nero BackItUp makes sure all your photos are backed up safely without draining your battery during the day or eating up your bandwidth. You can enable background backup in the app settings or through the camera settings.
