A label refers to a label on a disc. Some drives, e.g. drives that use LightScribe or Labelflash™ technology, can transfer labels directly to special media.
An image refers to a single file on the hard drive that contains the image for a complete disc. A disk image can be used to create exact copies on media at a later point in time if problems occur during the write process or if no recorder is connected to your PC. The image requires as much free space on the hard drive as the contents of the original disc.
The Universal Disc Format is a platform-independent file system. File names can be up to 255 characters long; 8 and 16 bit character sets are supported.
The advanced SCCI programming interface is the interface between the software, the SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) card and the operating system of a PC. This permits communication between the SCSI device (e.g. a SCSI scanner) and the SCSI card. However, ASPI drivers are also required for ATA, ATAPI, USB and FireWire interfaces.
Labelflash is a technology with which pictures and texts can be burned on the label side of a disc with a laser.
Nero Burning ROM is the professional solution for burning your audio, data, and video discs, backing up entire discs, and much more. Features many advanced settings and options and supports a wide range of formats.
CD Text consists of additional information on a CD that can store e.g. music track titles and artists. CD Text is stored in the so-called lead-in area of the CD before the audio data starts. The display on the CD player shows the additional data. You must have a CD burner which supports CD Text to enable the CD Text to be written to a CD. In particular, CD Text can only be written in disc-at-once mode.
Nero is sure that its users will enjoy and benefit from such a great value-added bonus. The Ask Toolbar makes searching the web easier and even includes links to Nero’s web pages, which always have useful information and tutorials for Nero users.
A multisession refers to completing a disc in multiple cycles. After a first session has been written to the disc, information can then be added in another record because the disc has not been finalized.
Disc format defines the the format in which the data is organized on a disc. For example, the disc format DVD-VR is only supported by and can only be used with DVD-RW and DVD-RAM discs. For example, Video CD (VCD), Super Video CD (SVCD), miniDVD and (if supported) HD-BURN can be burned to CD-R and CD-RW disc formats. The technical optionsavailable, such as subtitle or multiple sound tracks, are a factor of the disc format.
The leadout is the ending area of user data on a data carrier that is used to close a session. If the disc has not been completed yet, the reference for the next session is stored here.
The MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 audio format is used to reduce the size of audio files to a fraction of their original size (factor 1:10) with little loss of quality. You can estimate about 1 MB per minute as opposed to 10 MB for the original files. This value and the quality can vary depending on the complexity of the audio signal. The bit rate used can be used as a measure of quality. The higher the bit rate, the better the quality, but also the more memory required.
The Nero Gracenote Plug-in puts you in full control of your music library with advanced song and audio CD information such as titles, album name, and track number, plus album art for over 80 million songs on 6 million CDs!
The International Organization for Standardization defined the Universal Standard 9660 which determines the features of the CD. This format is platform-independent and can thus be read by computers with different operating systems. In order to ensure universal readability, the file names used should be as short as possible. (In a DOS environment no more than eight characters may be used).

Disc-At-Once refers to a method in which the laser in your recorder burns straight through in one session without turning off and on between each track. This method is best when recording Audio CDs you would like to play on your home or car stereo.

On-the-fly refers to a method for copying to a disc. The data is transferred directly from the original storage location to the disc to be burned. To do this, Nero uses a compilation, a small file that simply refers to the transferred data.
The compressor/decompressor encodes the data for recording or saving digitally and then decodes it for playback. Various software codecs are available such as Cinapak, Indeo, Quicktime, Video for Windows, etc. Hardware codecs include MPEG, H.261, Motion JPEG, etc.

Track-At-Once refers to a write method in which each track is written to the disc individually. The writing process is interrupted briefly after each track, i.e. the laser starts again for each track. With this write method, it is only possible to continue writing to a DVD sometimes and at a later stage. There is a pause of at least 27ms between tracks, which can be disruptive for Audio CDs.
The Ask Toolbar distributed through nero.com is available only for use with Internet Explorer 5.0 and greater.
Disc type refers to different optical storage media with different specifications. The best known are CD's and DVD's that can be written to once or multiple times, and which are manufactured with different storage capacities.
Digital Versatile Disc Random Access Memory is the first rewritable data carrier format developed. It is characterized by a distribution of sectors that makes it possible to achieve increased data integrity, quicker formatting, and improved error management in comparison to DVD+/-RW.
With an Audio CD, 75 sectors provide one second of played music. One sector consists of up to 98 frames; one frame contains 24 data bytes and 9 control bytes. Similarly, "frame" de-scribes a full screen in television and video technology. Two successive half images result in a full screen within a second due to interlacing.
The Audio Interchange File Format is an uncompressed audio file format from Apple® and represents a sort of counterpart to the WAV format from Microsoft. Files are larger than when using a compressed format, but the quality is higher. AIFF compressed is the compressed variation.
FireWire is an interface for the transfer of data at high speed; it was developed for hardware such as camcorders or hard drives. The serial high-speed bus allows for transfers of 100 to400 Mbit/s in the so-called IEEE 1394a or FireWire 400 standard and up to 3.20 Mbit/s in theso-called IEEE 1394b or FireWire 800 standard.

A buffer underrun is an interruption in the data flow in the internal memory (e.g. of the recorder). A buffer underrun results from an interruption in the data flow to the internal buffer. The buffer continues to deliver data until it is finally empty. When recording, data is fed continuously to the recorder's buffer in order to keep a steady flow of data. If the steady flow of data is interrupted, the media becomes unusable. Most modern recorders have a protective mechanism against buffer underruns.
The book type defines the specification (e.g. DVD-, DVD+, DVD-ROM) of a DVD. In order toensure correct playback, the DVD specifications are defined in books so that all media can be read correctly. The specifications are defined in the so-called Rainbow Books, which are distinguished by means of their color (e.g. Yellow Book).
The session-at-once method is mainly used for recording on CD EXTRA. A first session with various audio files is recorded in a single process without switching off the laser. However, the CD is not closed, which means you can still write more data to it. Afterwards a second (data) session is written and then the disc is closed.
A block refers to the smallest information on a CD-ROM or hard drive that is addressable in one access and that is indicated in bits or bytes. Several blocks are combined into a sector.
Subchannel data on a disc contains additional information, such as CD Text or information on positions.
A buffer refers to temporary memory that records and delivers data that cannot be processed immediately as required. The buffer also allows for continuous data flow.
Cache is a faster buffer that is used in various areas of a computer to access larger data vo-lumes faster. Cache ensures a continuous flow of data.
The lead-in is the starting area (innermost area) of user data on a data carrier. This is where the table of contents and additional information concerning the disc is stored.
The WAV audio format, also called WAVE or Waveform audio format, is an audio format from Microsoft and uses no data compression. WAV is the counterpart to the AIF format from Apple.
Archive bits are used to identify files that have been edited. A file is only resaved during the next backup process if it was edited (and an archive bit is thus reset).

A Super Video CD, abbreviated SVCD, is a CD format for movie files that uses the MPEG-2
video code to save. As a result, this disc format saves video files in a quality similar to an SVHS
video and can save up to 30 or 40 minutes of video with stereo sound on a 650 or 700
MB CD. SVCDs can be played back on an increasing number of DVD players and on the
