What is LightScribe® Direct Disc Labeling?
LightScribe® Direct Disc Labeling is an exciting disc labeling technology that enables you to burn silkscreen-quality labels directly on your CDs and DVDs providing easy to create professional quality no-hassle labels.
With LightScribe®, you can burn your data, music or video onto a CD or DVD, then simply flip the disc over, put it back into the drive, and burn your newly created label design directly onto the disc.
Certain elements are required so that you can fully enjoy LightScribe® technology:
- LightScribe®-enabled optical disc drive
- LightScribe®-compatible media
- Nero 9, Nero 8, Nero 7 or Nero 6 (Nero 6.6.0.8 or a later version installed)
- LightScribe® Host Software (download the latest version here)
Important note:
LightScribe® technology is not included in every version of Nero Essentials and depends on your license. Please contact our Technical Support Team for assistance to determine if this technology is included in your version of Nero Essentials.

LightScribe technology requires four elements:
- LightScribe enabled CD/DVD recorder
- LightScribe compatible CD/DVD
- Nero 7 or Nero 6 Reloaded (Nero 6.6.0.8 or later version installed)
- LightScribe Host Software must be installed. It can be downloaded here
If the LightScribe function does not work, please check the following settings:

Right-click on "LightScribeService Direct Disc Labeling Service", choose "Properties", go to "Startup type" and select "Automatic". The display under "Service status" has to be set to "Started". - In Windows, go to -

Double-click on the entry "Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only". Choose the option "Disabled". Confirm this change by clicking on "Apply” and "OK". - If you use Windows XP Home, please try the following steps:
Open the "Registry" by clicking on “Start” in Windows, clicking on “Run”, typing in "regedit" into the field "Open" and verifying with "OK".
Select the path
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon"
Doubleclick the entry "allocatecdroms" and check if the value is set to "0". If not, please set it to "0".
Stop and restart the service "LightScribe" in the control panel.

Now the Lightscribe function should be recognized.
Please also change a setting of the Lightscribe service:
Rightclick on the service "Lightscribe", select -
Properties -
Recovery
Select the option "restart the service" in the field "first failure". The option "restart service after 1 minute" will now be activated. Confirm this setting with "Apply" and "OK".
Uncheck the box "always print LightScribe Label".

Create unique LightScribe® labels in just a few steps:
1. Launching the program
To start Nero CoverDesigner via Nero StartSmart, proceed as follows:
- Click the StartSmart icon.
→ The Nero StartSmart window opens.
- Click the
button.
→ The list of Nero applications appears.

- Select the Nero CoverDesigner entry in the selection list.
- The Nero Nero CoverDesigner window opens.
→ You have launched Nero CoverDesigner via Nero StartSmart.
2. Creating LightScribe® labels
To create a LightScribe® label, proceed as follows:
- Create a new document with the LightScribe® document type.
- The document contains a Disc 1 tab with the cover element for the disc label.
- Design the disc label as desired.
To design the disc element, you can insert objects in the drawing area. To do this, proceed as follows:
a. To insert a picture:
- Click the
icon on the toolbar.
→ The Open browser window appears. - Select an image file and then click the Open button.
→ The Open window closes. The mouse pointer changes to a crosshair with a camera symbol, and the frame of the selected image is displayed around the pointer. - Click in the drawing area.
→ The selected picture is inserted.
b. To insert a text box:
- Click the
icon on the toolbar.
→ The mouse pointer changes to a crosshair with "Abc." - Click in the drawing area and drag the mouse pointer.
→ The Properties window, containing the Text Box tab, opens. - Enter the text in the input area.
- Specify the text options.
- Click the OK button.
→ The text box is inserted with the text that you entered.

3. Printing LightScribe® labels
To print a LightScribe® label, proceed as follows:
- Click the
icon on the toolbar.
→ The LightScribe® Print Properties window opens. - Set the desired print options.
- Insert a recordable LightScribe® disc into the LightScribe® recorder with the label side facing down.
- Click the Print button.
→ The printing process begins. You can monitor the process status with the progress bar. As soon as printing is finished, the Nero – LightScribe® window opens and displays a message about the result of the printing process. - Click the OK button.
→ You have successfully created and printed a custom LightScribe® label.
